SocEnv marks 20 years of Chartered Environmentalists

Today (Friday 20 September 2024) marks 20 years since the first Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) certificates were signed.

The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) is asking individuals aspiring to take the initiative in fostering a more sustainable future a critical question: "If not now, when?"

Established in 2002, SocEnv aims to promote excellence in environmental practices across various sectors. Its initial goal was to develop a chartered designation to professionalise these efforts, leading to the creation of the Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) designation in 2004, granted through a Royal charter.

The inaugural group of 65 CEnvs received their official accreditation on 20 September 2004, laying the foundation for a community that has since expanded to nearly 8,000 members, all committed to advancing sustainability.

Reflecting on two decades of progress, the urgency for change has never been greater, given the ongoing climate, biodiversity, and environmental crises, the society said. In commemorating 20 years of CEnv registration, Dr. Emma Wilcox CEnv FIMMM CMgr, Chief Executive of SocEnv, remarked: "CEnv registration has transformed the landscape of professionalism in addressing global challenges related to environmental protection. I firmly believe that CEnv, along with the more recent REnvP and REnvTech designations, has significantly enhanced influence, trust, commitment, and transformative action.

"The CEnv community also plays a crucial role in bridging knowledge gaps, fostering innovation, and accelerating the adoption of best practices across various sectors. However, we share a collective vision with our registrants and partners for a sustainable future that remains unfulfilled. Therefore, if you are contemplating taking the lead and contributing to this cause, I urge you to consider – if not now, when?"

The demand for individuals equipped with the knowledge and experience to address significant environmental challenges, both globally and locally, is on the rise. The CEnv designation exemplifies the knowledge, expertise, commitment, and professionalism that environmental professionals embody across all sectors. Initiating change begins with you, and your leadership is essential.
