Society for the Environment
This year’s World Environment Day on 5 June is hosted by Saudi Arabia and has the theme of land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. 2024 also marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40% of the planet’s land is degraded. This directly affects half of the world’s population and threatens roughly half of global GDP ($44tn). The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29% since 2000.
Without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050, according to the UN.
There is some amazing cross-sector work being done to tackle these challenges.
To share solutions, the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) asked the experts – Chartered Environmentalists – for their insights on the vital role played by water and soil management, nature-based solutions and how land restoration can enhance drought resilience. Read more at bit.ly/SocEnv_WED24
