The UK is facing a netzero skills shortage by failing to understand and plan for future requirements, a report by EngineeringUK has warned.

The report analyses almost 30 research studies on engineering, green jobs and the skills needed to decarbonise all sectors of the UK economy.

It concludes that there is no consistent understanding of neither the future demand for engineering and technical skills at a national level, nor of the implications for those in secondary and tertiary education.

Mike Hardisty, Head of Environmental Sustainability at EngineeringUK, said:

“It’s clear that we could be sleepwalking towards a skills shortage without knowing how big the gaps are and where they are. We need more young people to take STEM subjects at school and in further education, but we are lacking the teachers and the infrastructure to make this happen.”
