Three practical ways to estimate greenhouse gas emissions

Ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), new guidance from Pledge to Net Zero highlights three practical ways for environmental and engineering professionals to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions attached to their designs and advice.

Currently, the designs and advice provided by the environmental and engineering sectors represent the largest greenhouse gas impact of the sector. In fact, the UN Environment Programme reported that the buildings and construction sector account for 37% of emissions globally. However, these emissions are not effectively included in current science-based targets because they fall outside the boundaries of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for Scope 3 emissions.

The guidance aims to fill this gap. Three methods that firms can use to estimate the greenhouse gas impact of their work are discussed in the guidance, each with various levels of detail and purposes. Comment and suggestions for improvement are also welcomed. SocEnv is one of the founding members of Pledge to Net Zero and sits on the initiative steering group.
