CABE’s Built Environment series is back and bigger than ever, covering the UK and Ireland as well as specific CPD topics.

In 2024, CABE undertook a listening exercise among members to ask what you wanted from the live events – the result is a UK-wide online and in-person Built Environment series for 2026

Built Environment Scotland – Online – 25 February

The online, half-day conference will cover developments within the Scottish Building Standards, changes to policy and legislation, and the declared crisis in the housebuilding sector, as well as issues in the wider industry.

What to expect on the day

There will be four sessions: session one is an update and overview of the recent regulatory reform on the Scottish Building Standards. Session two covers building to the Passivhaus standard in Scotland with a case study. Session three reviews the impact of the new role of compliance plan managers on verifiers, design teams and contractors. Session four looks at fire safety and considers what’s next for Scotland.

This conference is an essential learning opportunity for professionals on key aspects of compliance and quality in the built environment in Scotland, including:

  • how changes to Section 6 of the Building Standards Technical Handbook – Energy and Environmental Standards for New Buildings impacts your projects
  • how changes to building standards processes affect compliance
  • the proposals for the competence management of verifiers; and
  • the upcoming changes to Section 2 of the Building Standards Technical Handbook – Fire Safety and what they mean for the industry.

Building Control – University of Hertfordshire – 18 March

The first in-person event will combine keynote insights with more focused technical sessions including construction product standards, fire safety and structural safety.

What to expect on the day

There will be five sessions covering recent regulatory reforms and other key developments affecting the region, including:

  • the perspective of government on the future for building professionals
  • key changes to British and international standards including PAS 2000
  • insight into PAS 9980 and an understanding of issues in relation to fire risk assessments in external walls
  • updates on key areas of development in relation to fire safety
  • improving understanding of the issues relating to structural safety including RAAC and punching shear; and
  • understanding how to correctly apply the Eurocodes and how their future developments will affect professionals in the industry.

Wales – Cardiff Metropolitan University – 24 June

This in-person event will explore key aspects of the implementation of the Building Safety Act in Wales including new building control processes for higher-risk buildings, dutyholding responsibilities and the Golden Thread of Information.

What to expect on the day

The first session will be an update on regulatory reform to the Building Safety Act in Wales. Session two covers a legal overview on how it will be enforced and your liability. Session three is about the new process for higher-risk buildings. Session four covers new roles and responsibilities including competence. Session five explores occupation management and remediation, and how to work on existing buildings.
